Ghost Camera: New Details, Screenshots, and Video

The Fatal Frame spinoff, Ghost Camera (perviously listed as Spirit Camera), will soon be released on the Nintendo 3DS in Japan. As such, a slew of promotional material has been released, along with more information about the title.

It turns out the game is utilizing the 3DS’s AR capabilities more than the developer’s previously let on.

The game comes with an AR notebook, which you scan as you play the game to cause ghosts and other mysterious things to appear. The notebook also plays a part in the games plot. When you receive the journal in the game, it comes with a curse, and the only way to free yourself from the curse is to solve all the mysteries hidden within the journal.

Using the game’s camera system, you can take pictures of your surroundings, which will cause ghosts to appear. You also take pictures of yourself and people around you, in order to make the spirits that possess them emerge. It isn’ exactly clear, but I’ve previously speculated that it would be interesting if the game let you fight ghosts in real-life environments using the 3DS’s build-in camera and gyroscope.

It’s unclear if taking pictures will just make creepy things appear or if you’ll actually have to fight the ghosts appearing in your house. If the latter is true, that is awesome. But can ghosts only appear when you take pictures to activate them, or will they appear when you least expect to them to, lurking around a corner in a dark hallway?

There are quite a few third-party titles that I am looking forward to on the 3DS. Unfortunately, none of those titles have been announced for a North American release. Ghost Camera falls into that category. Hopefully it will not share the same fate as Fatal Frame 4, which, while released on the Wii in Japan, was never released elsewhere.
