Pokemon Roundup: Cresselia!

Published on September 12th, 2010 by in DS

In the Pokemon Roundup column, information concerning a Pokemon, as well as move-sets, will be presented for all to see!

This week’s participant in the Pokemon Roundup is Number 488 in the National Dex; may I present the Lunar Pokemon, Cresselia! It is said that those who sleep holding Cresselia’s feather are assured of joyful dreams, and it represents the crescent moon.

Ability

Levitate- Damage dealing Ground-type moves have no effect on this Pokemon. Cannot be trapped by the Arena Trap ability. Takes no damage from Spikes.

Type

Cresselia is a pure Psychic-type Legendary Pokemon.

Base Stats

~120 HP

~70 Attack

~120 Defense

~75 Special Attack

~130 Special Defense

~85 Speed

Movesets

First of all, I would like to thank ZeldaInformer Forums member Sweet-Devil for and fellow NN writer Clinton Wagoner for their help creating the move-sets for this column.

Dual Screen

Item: Light Clay

Bold/Calm Nature

EVs: 252 HP/252 Defense/4 Special Defense

Moves:

~Reflect

~Light Screen

~Lunar Dance

~Psychic
Due to her natural bulk and access to both Light Screen and Reflect, Cresselia makes a perfect Dual Screen support Pokemon. While Tyranitar usually counters Cresselia, Crunch will not hit Cresselia very hard if she’s behind Reflect[ Tyranitar's Crunch against this Cresselia set under Reflect if the Tyranitar's Attack stat is maxed is 26.1%-31.1% damage, not even a 3HKO]. . Psychic will be the main attacking move and is a decent STAB. Lunar Dance allows you to get rid of Cresselia and get something else out, protected behind the screens.

Calm Mind

Item: Leftovers

Bold Nature

EVs: 252 HP/252 Defense/4 Special Defense

Moves:

~Calm Mind

~Psychic

~Hidden Power Fighting

~Moonlight

This set gives Cresselia a high defense while boosting its special attack and special defense with Calm Mind. Psychic allows for STAB power, while Hidden Power Fighting is there as a counter to Dark type switch-ins. Moonlight allows for HP recovory.

Psycho Shifter

Item: Flame Orb

Calm Nature

252 HP/252 SpD/4 SpA

Moves:

~Psycho Shift

~Toxic

~Psychic

~Shadow Ball

Psycho Shift allows Cresselia to transfer the burn received from its Flame Orb to the opponent, dealing damage while lowing the Attack stat. Do to the opponent’s Attack stat being lowered, this Cresselia’s EVs can focus more on HP and Special Defense. Toxic allows Cresselia to deal status damage to Pokemon who cannot be burned. Psychic will be the primary attacking move, as it deals STAB. Shadow Ball allows Cresselia to take out incoming ghosts and other Psychic types.

In-Game Location

You will originally meet Cresselia on Full Moon Island in Sinnoh. However, it will run away if talked to and begin roaming around the Sinnoh region.

Nicknames

Hmm, Psycho Shift set is interesting, but Flame Orb is too risky..

When facing a Cresselia, the opponent will think of statusing her like using Toxic or Will-O-Wisp, so Flame Orb really isn’t needed as there are many wall breakers with Toxic nowadays, Leftovers is a much better option.

And Toxic really isn’t needed at all, you’ll be Psycho Shifting Pokemon with Burn, so Toxic is redundant.. as you can’t poison already burned foes. [i do realize it's for Fire types or Heatran.. but you should have other team members who can take care of them, especially since Heatran is immune to Toxic anyway..]

And Tyranitar and Scizor -> really <- should be mentioned in every analysis, they give Cresselia nightmares, especially since she's weak to Pursuit, which is why she is BL and not OU, cause lots of OU just rape her.

    Cool Pokemon!

  • Clinton Wagoner

Come on SD, T-tar and scizor are the reason to pass flame orb. The psycho shift set(and all the rest) get my stamp of approval. The reason it works is because Cresselia has access to an instant recovery move.

  • sweet-devil

And that instant recovery move is raped by Tyranitar.

Tyranitar basically cums on it with Pursuit, Crunch, and ruining it’s recovery move. So there. >_>

I wish there is an edit button.

Anyway, adding to what i said above, the Psycho Shift set does seem like it could work, burning whole teams and causing switches, making it an incredible tank, you should mention more stuff, like, what support it needs [Entry hazards like Stealth Rock, Spikes, but not Toxic Spikes] etc.

And you should mention Suicune or Vaporeon as teammates with the Psycho Shift set. [mainly to counter Heatran, cause Heatran walls that set hard.] Other than that, it really in interesting, should give it a try sometimes..
